Breaking Barriers

"Rockies Honor Robinson" Youth Essay Contest

Jackie Robinson

One of the most significant moments in Major League Baseball history was when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on April 15, 1947. In 2004, Commissioner Selig proclaimed that April 15 would always be known as Jackie Robinson Day. Our goal is to celebrate this moment by bringing more exposure to the life, values and accomplishments of not only Jackie Robinson but other African-American leaders who have inspired us to break any barrier and succeed. We hope you will join us by participating in the "Rockies Honor Robinson" Youth Essay Contest in celebration of Jackie Robinson and Black History Month.

How the Contest Works

The contest theme is "Breaking Barriers" and elementary, middle school and high school students are invited to submit an essay describing what breaking barriers means to them. Your students can focus the essay on an individual or something they have experienced in their personal lives that applies to the theme of breaking barriers. (Please note that this was an artistic contest in previous years but was changed to an essay contest in an effort to allow students to express themselves through writing.)

Each student at your school who submits an entry will receive 4 tickets to a Rockies game on April 15, 16, 17, 22 or 23, 2013, depending on availability. Out of all of the entries submitted within your school, teachers will select the top three, which will be sent to us by March 20 to compete with top entries from other participating schools for prizes that include VIP tickets for the students' families to the April 15 game, officially "Jackie Robinson Day" across Major League Baseball, and participation in a pregame onfield ceremony!

This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about inspirational African-American leaders and it's one lesson plan done! Your school's top three entries need to be postmarked by March 20, 2013.

If you have any questions, please call Jordan McGregor or Marisol Villagomez at (303) 292- 0200.
