Newly Renovated Magglio Ordoñez Field to be Unveiled this Friday at St. Hedwig Park in Detroit 07/21/2010 3:26 PM ETMLB.com
Through the generosity of Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordoñez, the Detroit Tigers Foundation, an affiliate of Ilitch Charities, partnered with Think Detroit PAL to renovate St. Hedwig Park in southwest Detroit, located on 5680 Konkel Street. The newly renovated facility will be known as Magglio Ordoñez Field and will be home to thousands of young aspiring ballplayers. In partnership with Think Detroit PAL, Summer in the City and the St. Hedwig Coalition, a field dedication ceremony will be held this Friday, July 23 starting at 12:30 p.m. as part of a community clean up and barbeque for over 200 Detroit youth. The development of the Magglio Ordoñez Field at St Hedwig Park is part of the Detroit Tigers Foundation's efforts to bring new life to baseball, softball and Tee Ball fields weathered by time, financial hardship or neglect. Field renovation projects create safe and playable diamonds for youth of our community. The Detroit Tigers Foundation has improved nearly 50 fields in cities across Michigan. This project included the construction of a new baseball diamond and renovation of the existing diamond at the park. Additionally, it will also be announced during the ceremony that a third diamond will be renovated and constructed this fall to be ready for play next summer. Ordoñez is scheduled to attend the field dedication and perform the ribbon cutting to officially open the community baseball fields. Ordoñez will be joined by Tigers executives including Tigers Vice President and Assistant General Manager Al Avila as well as Detroit's favorite mascot, PAWS.
