Instructions for Grant Application

Grant Application »

What is the Detroit Tigers Foundation?
The Detroit Tigers Foundation, a non-profit organization, is the official charity of the Detroit Tigers. The Foundation assists charitable and educational causes in Michigan with an emphasis on programs that benefit children and youth in Detroit through the game of baseball. The Detroit Tigers Foundation is affiliated with the Ilitch Charities, a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Who is Eligible for funding?
The Detroit Tigers Foundation assists a wide variety of charitable activities and programs related to:

• Education
• Recreation
• Baseball or Softball Field Renovation Projects

All grant recipients must be public charities exempt from taxation under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. While grant recipients may represent a diverse range of programs involving all age groups, the focus of the Detroit Tigers Foundation is on programs that benefit the children and youth of Detroit and its metropolitan area.

Unfortunately, not all funding requests can be filled. Also, there are activities and programs that are not consistent with the Detroit Tigers Foundation's guidelines. Among those are requests for buildings and equipment, endowments, political campaigns and activities, religious programs of a strictly denominational nature, individuals (including loans and scholarships and medical needs), raffles, banquets, graduation events, advertising, multi-year grant requests and requests for grants outside of Michigan that do not benefit citizens of Michigan.

How do you apply?
Interested parties should complete a grant application. A cover letter on organization letterhead, a detailed project budget and a copy of the organization's IRS determination letter granting tax-exempt status under Section 501(c) (3) must accompany the application.

When do you apply?
Grant requests are accepted each year between September 1 and December 20. Following receipt of your application, you may be asked to provide additional information - particularly if your application concerns a field renovation project. Grant applications are reviewed throughout the spring. Determinations are made after Opening Day with awards made - in most cases - before June 1.
