Thursday, March 1 Phillies at the plate: Greg Dobbs' two-run homer off Dennis Tankersley started Philadelphia's rally in the fourth inning. Ex-Tigers Karim Garcia and Randall Simon added RBI singles before former Detroit farmhand Brent Abernathy tied it in the sixth. Tigers at the plate: Detroit's left-handed hitters provided the scoring damage before Gary Sheffield hit his first home run as a Tiger. Sean Casey's one-out double in the second off lefty Jamie Moyer helped open the scoring once he came home on Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly. Placido Polanco's two-run single put Detroit back ahead in the sixth. Phillies on the mound: Casey's run was the only damage for Moyer before he seemed to tire in the third. Sheffield's home run ended Moyer's afternoon. Tigers on the mound: Mike Maroth rebounded from two well-hit balls early to toss two scoreless innings of one-hit ball, inducing a double play ground ball to end the first inning. Justin Verlander made his spring debut with a scoreless inning. Grapefruit League records: Tigers 2-0, Phillies 0-1. Up next: The Tigers trek up Interstate 4 to Kissimmee on Friday for a 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Astros. Jeremy Bonderman will test out his new changeup against opposing hitters for the first time as part of two innings of work. The Phillies host the Astros on Friday afternoon, with Brett Myers making his first start of the spring.
