Twins at the plate: Denard Span led off the first inning with a double to left field, but the Twins were scoreless until the eighth inning. Craig Monroe went 2-for-3 with two singles to left field. Adam Everett delivered his third hit of the spring when he singled to center in the third, and then added another with a single to left in the eighth. Chris Basak drove in the Twins' lone run with an RBI single to right.

Rays at the plate: The Rays scored two runs in the third inning thanks to a Willy Abyar double to center and a single by Eric Hinske to right field. Dioner Navarro and Evan Longoria each homered for the first time this spring, delivering solo shots in the sixth and eighth innings, respectively. Elliot Johnson went 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Twins on the mound: Starter Livan Hernandez pitched four innings, giving up two runs on three hits. His only difficult inning came in the third, when he allowed three of his hits and issued a walk. Left-hander Glen Perkins, who is competing for the fifth spot in the rotation, allowed two runs on four hits in his two innings. Juan Rincon gave up a leadoff homer in the eighth to Longoria in his one inning of work.

Rays on the mound: James Shields pitched five scoreless innings, allowing four hits while walking one. Left-hander Kurt Birkins issued two walks but did not give up a run in his lone inning of work. Jae Kuk Ryu gave up the only run to the Twins, as he allowed three hits and struck out two in the eighth.

Grapefruit League records: Twins 8-5; Rays 8-3.

Up next: Left-hander Francisco Liriano, who is 16 months removed from Tommy John surgery, will make his second start of the spring when the Twins host the Red Sox in a 12:05 p.m. CT contest on Wednesday. It's the fifth and final time the two teams will meet this spring and the winner will take home the coveted Mayor's Cup trophy.

The highly anticipated Rays vs. Yankees Part II takes place on Wednesday afternoon at Progress Energy Park, home of Al Lang Field, when the Rays host the Yankees in a 1:05 p.m. contest. Wednesday afternoon's game will mark the first time the two teams have met since Saturday, when a controversy was sparked by a play at home plate that saw Johnson of the Rays run over Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli, resulting in a broken right wrist for Cervelli. Andy Sonnanstine, who is in contention for one of two open slots in the Rays' rotation, will start for the Rays and will be followed by Brian Anderson, Gary Glover, Troy Percival and Dan Wheeler. Andy Pettitte will start for the Yankees.
