Reigning Miss America and Detroit-area native Kirsten Haglund will be at the center of the Tigers' Opening Day festivities, performing the national anthem and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the Tigers take on the Royals on Monday, March 31 at Comerica Park.

The 19-year-old from Farmington Hills, Mich., will also perform God Bless America during the 7th inning stretch.

Haglund was crowned Miss America at the 2008 competition in January. The graduate of Walled Lake Western High School is a student at the University of Cincinnati pursuing a degree in musical theater in hopes of becoming a Broadway performer. She's currently on a national speaking tour for the Miss America Organization while pursuing her personal platform to raise awareness of eating disorders. She also serves as a goodwill ambassador for the Children's Miracle Network.

"The Opening Day of the baseball season is always special in Detroit. However, the opportunity to have the reigning Miss America 2008 involved makes it even more special," team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. "The Tigers organization and our great fans look forward to honoring this bright and talented young woman."
