Sabathia wins NL Pitcher of the Month
Lefty went 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA after his July 7 trade
CINCINNATI -- Talk about making a good first impression.Four weeks to the day since he was traded from the Indians to the Brewers, CC Sabathia was named the National League Pitcher of the Month for July, becoming the first Brewers left-hander ever to win the award. In his five July starts after the July 7 trade, Sabathia was 4-0 with a 1.82 ERA and three consecutive complete games. He held opponents to a .209 batting average while striking out 34 in 39 2/3 innings. "I'm just trying to do my job," Sabathia said. "I was fortunate enough to get that." The individual awards are apparently lost on Sabathia, who could not remember whether he had ever won an American League Pitcher of the Month award during his seven-plus seasons with the Indians. He had, in June 2006. Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun was also honored on Monday with the NL Player of the Month award. He and Sabathia became the first teammates bestowed with the top league honors at the same time since right-hander John Maine and shortstop Jose Reyes of the Mets won in April 2007. The Brewers came close last June, when right-hander Ben Sheets was named the NL Pitcher of the Month. At the same time, Braun won the first of two consecutive NL Rookie of the Month awards. Sabathia was happy to talk about something other than, "The Trade." Because the Brewers struck early in the month and came to terms with the Indians, they spared Sabathia the same Trade Deadline stress that fell on players like Manny Ramirez, Jason Bay and Ken Griffey Jr., all of whom were dealt in the final hours of July. "I'm here, I'm adjusted, so there's not much more to talk about," said Sabathia, who celebrated his four-week anniversary with the Brewers on Monday. "It went by pretty quick, huh? When you're winning, having fun and the team is doing well, it usually does go by quick." Others receiving votes in the pitcher category last month were the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez (5-1, 1.74 ERA, 29 strikeouts), the Mets' Oliver Perez (1-1, 1.38 ERA, 36 strikeouts) and the Cubs' Carlos Zambrano (4-1, 1.78 ERA, 28 strikeouts). Sabathia will receive a specially-designed trophy to commemorate his Pitcher of the Month performance.
