Todd Jones will begin his retirement years in rehab mode.

Jones, the former Tigers closer, underwent successful arthroscopic surgery to repair tears in his right rotator cuff and right labrum, the Tigers announced Tuesday. Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure in Birmingham, Ala., on Dec. 9.

The 40-year-old Jones retired from baseball at the end of the '08 season. He went home to Alabama, where he was rehabbing his injured shoulder, but he ultimately decided to have the surgery.

In 16 big league seasons, Jones compiled a 56-63 record, 3.97 ERA and 319 saves in 982 appearances. He saved 235 games in his tenure with the Tigers, setting a franchise record.
