Reedy, involved in Martin crash, dies

Michigan resident succumbs on Sunday at age 72

07/09/09 10:52 AM ET

William Reedy, the man convicted of drunk driving in a crash that killed ex-Yankees and Tigers manager Billy Martin, died on Sunday, according to The Associated Press. He was 72.

Edward Swanson & Son Funeral Home in Madison Heights, Mich., told the AP that Reedy had pancreatic cancer and passed away at his Milford, Mich., home.

Reedy was with Martin in a pickup truck that crashed on an icy road near Martin's Binghamton, N.Y.-area farm during Christmas 1989. Reedy first said he had been driving, then said he lied to protect Martin's reputation. But a jury found him guilty of drunken driving on September 1990.

Reedy owned a couple of bars near Tiger Stadium, the team's home until 1999, and was also a one-time administrative assistant to former Detroit City Councilman Jack Kelley.
