Umpire leaves game after foul tip
Welke forced to vacate home-plate duties in Anaheim
ANAHEIM -- Home-plate umpire Tim Welke left Monday's game between the Angels and Tigers at Angel Stadium after getting struck in the facemask by a foul ball hit by Halos designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero in the fourth inning.Guerrero fouled back a 98-mph fastball from right-hander Justin Verlander on the second pitch of his at-bat straight back into Welke's facemask. Welke then walked around to regain his composure before conferring with the rest of the umpire crew and Angels trainer Rick Smith. Welke then remained behind the plate the rest of the inning and came out for the top of the fifth while second-base umpire Mark Carlson got ready to take over behind the plate for Welke in the bottom of the fifth. First-base umpire Chad Fairchild and third-base umpire Jim Wolf remained at their positions after Carlson's change as they worked the rest of the game with a three-man crew.
