Konerko needs late push to earn ASG nod

CHICAGO -- The push to make Paul Konerko an All-Star starter is reaching the home stretch, and the White Sox first baseman remains in prime contention to earn the nod.Konerko remained in second place among American League first basemen per Monday's release of the latest results. Detroit's Prince Fielder continues to lead with 2,825,532 votes, while Konerko is close behind at 2,261,388. Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- online or via your mobile device -- using the 2012 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot until Thursday at 10:59 p.m. CT. Fans can also once again participate in the State Farm Home Run Derby Fan Poll. Fans will have the opportunity to select three players in each league who they would most like to see participate in the State Farm Home Run Derby. The 2012 State Farm Home Run Derby -- part of Gatorade All-Star Workout Day -- will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes and ESPN Radio in the United States beginning at 7 p.m. CT on Monday, July 9. The 2012 American League and National League All-Star teams will be unveiled on Sunday, July 1, on the 2012 MLB All-Star Game Selection Show, televised nationally on TBS. Baseball fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the 2012 All-Star Game Final Vote on MLB.com. And the voting doesn't end there. The final phase of All-Star Game voting will again have fans participating in the official voting for the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet. During the Midsummer Classic, fans will vote exclusively online at MLB.com via the 2012 All-Star Game MLB.com MVP Vote, and their voice will represent 20 percent of the official vote determining the recipient. Konerko's average has dropped from .373 on June 12 to a still robust, American League-leading .342 mark entering Monday's series opener against the Twins. His .417 on-base percentage also puts him atop that AL category, one point ahead of the Twins' Joe Mauer.
Designated hitter Adam Dunn moved up to third at his position with 1,436,643 votes, trailing David Ortiz (3,128,711) and Michael Young (2,564,572). Dunn is tied for the Major League lead with Jose Bautista with 23 homers and ranks sixth with his 53 RBIs.
A.J. Pierzynski checks in fourth at catcher with his 1,416,594 votes, sitting behind Mike Napoli (3,008,228), Mauer (1,772,228) and Matt Wieters (1,623,459). Pierzynski ranks second among all catchers with 12 homers and 41 RBIs.
