Detroit Tigers to celebrate members of Armed Forces tomorrow at Comerica Park for Independence Day
Armed Forces members to be recognized during pregame ceremony
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers will celebrate the dedication and sacrifice of current and former members of the Armed Forces tomorrow in honor of Independence Day. The Tigers will donate 1,000 tickets to local members of the Armed Forces and Veterans along with their families to attend the game as the Tigers take on the Minnesota Twins tomorrow night.
Members of the Armed Forces and Veterans will be on the field tomorrow at Comerica Park and will be recognized for their service to the United States Armed Forces prior to the national anthem. The Tigers partnered with local organizations to invite active service members and Veterans to participate in the event. The participating organizations include: Selfridge Air National Guard Base, United States Navy Recruiting Office of Detroit, United States Marines, United States Air Force, United States Coast Guard, Operation Homefront, Disabled American Veterans, John D. Dingell Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Detroit, Homeless Veterans Shelter, Marine Corps League Downriver Detachment, Rolling Thunder POW, Tuskegee Airmen, Veteran’s Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System and Wayne State University Student Veterans Organization.
Colonel Philip Sheridan and Adjutant Rolly Lee will each throw a ceremonial first pitch to represent all active service members and Veterans. Colonel Philip Sheridan, Vice Commander, 127th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, is the second in command to the largest Air National Guard Base in the country. Adjutant Rolly Lee is a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Department of Michigan. Captain Daniel Mercante of the Michigan Air National Guard from Harrison Township, Michigan will deliver the game ball. He recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan where he served as a pilot with the 107th fighter squad of the 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard. Captain Mercante has proudly served the Michigan Air National Guard for 9 years. Senior Master Sergeant Mark Kaufmann will sing the national anthem
and God Bless America. He is a member of the 127th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard from Selfridge Air National Guard Base. A giant American flag in the shape of the United States will be held on the field during the national anthem. The 127th Wing, Michigan Air National Guard from Selfridge Air National Guard Base will also provide the fly-over after the national anthem and additionally will serve as Honor Guard.
The first 10,000 adults 21-and-over to enter Comerica Park will receive a Red, White and Blue Detroit Tigers Cap, courtesy of Miller Lite. Additionally, special Independence Day Fireworks will take place following the game (weather permitting).
