Giambi, Garcia win American League Pepsi Player, Pitcher of the Month for June

New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi and Seattle Mariners right-hander Freddy Garcia have been named American League Player and Pitcher of the Month for June, respectively.

Giambi, who batted .373 (31-for-83) in 27 games with 11 home runs and 29 RBI, led the American League in slugging (.819) and on-base percentage (.554), and tied for the league lead with 27 runs. He also drew 33 walks. Giambi hit long balls in his first career games at Great American Ball Park and Wrigley Field, drilled a pair of homers vs. the St. Louis Cardinals on June 14, and hit three home runs with nine RBI in six Subway Series games against the New York Mets.

In six starts, Garcia went 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 44.0 innings pitched, allowing 39 hits. The 2002 AL All-Star excelled in Interleague Play, going 2-0 with a 1.21 ERA in three starts. He earned a complete game victory at Shea Stadium on June 8 and held Atlanta to one run over 7.1 innings in a win on June 13. Garcia defeated AL West rival Anaheim in consecutive starts (2-0, 1.84) on June 18 and 24.

Other players who received votes for the award were Minnesota's Corey Koskie (AL-best .408, 5 HR, 21 RBI); Anaheim's Garret Anderson (.336, AL-best 12 HR, 26 RBI); Boston's Nomar Garciaparra (AL-best 45 hits, .398, 7 3B, 2 HR, 16 RBI) and Manny Ramirez (.351, 9 HR, 27 RBI, AL-best 27 R); AL Pepsi Rookie of the Month Hideki Matsui (.394, 6 HR, 29 RBI) of the Yankees; Oakland's Eric Byrnes (.322, 7 HR, 17 RBI); Ichiro Suzuki (.386, 44 hits, 10 stolen bases) of the Mariners; and Toronto's Carlos Delgado (.253, 10 HR, AL-best 34 RBI) and Vernon Wells (.369, 8 HR, 24 RBI).

Pitchers who received consideration were Roy Halladay (5-0, 3.15, 45.2 IP) of the Blue Jays; Mariano Rivera (1-0, 0.90 ERA, 11 saves) and David Wells (4-0, 3.27, 41.1 IP, 1 BB) of the Yankees; Tampa Bays Victor Zambrano (4-1, 2.36, 42.0 IP, 23 H); Ramon Ortiz (5-1, 3.72) of the Angels; Kansas Citys Mike MacDougal (2-0, 2.77, 8 saves); and John Burkett (3-0, 2.92) and Derek Lowe (5-0, 3.27) of the Red Sox.

Giambi, now a four-time monthly award winner, and Garcia, a first-time winner, will each receive specially designed trophies as the American League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month.
