Houston's Lance Berkman and San Francisco's Jason Schmidt named NL Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month for May
Lance Berkman of the Houston Astros and Jason Schmidt of the San Francisco Giants have been named National League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for May.
It marks the second consecutive month that an Astro and a Giant have won the awards. In April roles were reversed as San Francisco's Barry Bonds received Pepsi Player of the Month and Houston's Roger Clemens was voted Pepsi Pitcher of the Month.
Berkman led the NL with a .387 batting average (36-for-93) for May, belted nine home runs and 10 doubles, and collected 24 RBI and 20 runs. He also led the League with a .785 slugging percentage and a .521 on-base percentage.
Schmidt was 5-0 with a 1.53 ERA during the month as the Giants moved into third place in the NL West, only 2 ½ games behind the division-leading San Diego Padres. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out 54 batters, walked only 13, and allowed 23 hits in 47 innings pitched. He tossed a complete game shutout on May 18 in a 1-0 Giants win over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Other pitchers receiving votes included: Arizona's Randy Johnson (4-2, 1.99 ERA, 48 SO, perfect game); Florida's Armando Benitez (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 SV); and Danny Graves (1-1, 1.96 ERA, 14 SV), Paul Wilson (4-0, 2.34 ERA, 45 SO), and John Riedling (4-0, 2.20 ERA, 11 SO) of the Reds.
Other players receiving votes included: Ken Griffey, Jr. (.260, 10 HR, 29 RBI) and Sean Casey (.377, 6 HR, 22 RBI) of the Reds; Colorado's Jeromy Burnitz (.295, 8 HR, 28 RBI); Philadelphia's Pat Burrell (.333, 8 HR, 26 RBI); and Pittsburgh's Craig Wilson (.358, 7 HR, 22 RBI).
Berkman and Schmidt will each receive a specially designed trophy for being named National League Pepsi Player and Pitcher of the Month.
