Young named AL Player of the Week
By Jason Beck / MLB.com
All of Young's homers came in last Monday's Opening Day victory over the Royals, making him the third Major Leaguer in history to hit three in a season opener. He also went 4-for-4 in that game. For the week, Young's nine runs scored, two triples, .958 slugging percentage and 23 total bases led AL hitters.
Young's hitting helped propel a Tigers offense that scored an AL-best 40 runs in its first six games. Shortstop Carlos Guillen also earned consideration after batting .455 (10-for-22).
The last time Young won AL Player of the Week, he had far less support in the lineup. He took the honor for the week of May 26-June 1, 2003, by hitting .458 (11-for-24) with three home runs and seven RBIs. The award completed a month in which he hit .355 (38-for-107) with six doubles, three triples, six homers and 25 RBIs.
Young will receive a Torneau Swiss timepiece for his award.
