Cabrera closing in on All-Star start

ARLINGTON -- Miguel Cabrera is a virtual lock at this point to do at first base what he couldn't do for four years there previously: Earn an All-Star voting nod. The only question is how many total votes he'll end up garnering.

He entered this week with more than 2.6 million votes, topping the combined totals of his nearest two competitors at first, White Sox slugger Jose Abreu and defending All-Star starter Chris Davis. Not even Derek Jeter in his farewell season has kept up the same pace in voting.

The only American Leaguers at any position with more votes are both outfielders. Toronto's Jose Bautista had more than 3.6 million votes going into the week, followed by Mike Trout at just under 3.3 million.

Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com -- online or on a mobile device -- using the 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot Sponsored by Experian until Thursday, July 3, at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2014 All-Star Game will be played at Target Field on Tuesday, July 15 on FOX.
