Thompson honored to be Tigers' first pick
With the 91st overall pick on the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, the Tigers went with pitching. They selected Jake Thompson, a 6-foot-4, 235-pound right-handed pitcher out of Rockwall-Heath High School in Heath, Texas.

MLB, Habitat for Humanity, State Farm Insurance and the Tuscaloosa Fire Department joined to build a house for the Patrice Johnson family in Alabama. The family lost their previous home in a devastating tornado.

Former Rangers executive Keller dies at 84
Hal Keller, who drafted, signed and developed some of the best players in the early years of the Rangers franchise, passed away on Tuesday at his home in Sequim, Wash. He was 84.

Lee Mazzilli's son selected by Twins
The Twins tapped into some Major League bloodlines during Day 2 of the First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday. Minnesota used its ninth-round pick to select Connecticut second baseman LJ Mazzilli, son of former player and manager Lee Mazzilli.

Papi leads All-Star voting at designated hitter
Designated hitter David Ortiz is having another big season that could result in a spot on the American League All-Star team. When the first round of balloting results were unveiled on Tuesday, Ortiz was the leader at DH with 1,204,904. Michael Young of the Rangers was not far behind, at 1,049,170.

Past All-Stars Matt Kemp of the Dodgers, Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano of the Yankees and Matt Joyce of the Rays sat in front of 15 TV screens at the MLB Fan Cave and watched on Tuesday as the first ad spot, called "The Pledge," was screened during the live All-Star Leadoff event.

LA's Guerra has surgery for small meniscus tear
Dodgers reliever Javy Guerra underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery Tuesday to repair a small tear of the lateral meniscus and will be sidelined four to six weeks. Dodgers team physician Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery.

Storen throwing from flat ground every day
