Jonny Gomes' game-tying grand slam in the top of the eighth wasn't enough for the Rays as the bullpen surrendered the lead in the bottom of the inning. Right-hander Jason Hammel, who left his last start early with shoulder tightness, was roughed up in his return, allowing five runs and 10 hits in four innings. Dioner Navarro also homered and had two RBIs.
After a furious Rays comeback in the top of the eighth, the Tigers answered with three runs in the bottom half, led by Ryan Raburn, who scored the go-ahead run. Nate Robertson cruised through 7 2/3 innings, striking out a season-high nine before the bullpen allowed a game-tying grand slam. Raburn, Magglio Ordonez and Curtis Granderson each scored twice.
