Coaching/Playing Career
Heberto Andrade is in his 10th season as the Pirates Bullpen Catcher. His daily responsibilities include catching pitchers' bullpen sessions prior to games and warming up pitchers during the games. He also observes what pitchers are doing mechanically and has regular communication with the Bullpen Coach and Pitching Coach. Herbie also throws to the hitters during batting practice on a daily basis.
Andrade spent three years (1986-88) as a catcher in the Chicago Cubs farm system and also played professional baseball in Venezuela, Italy and Colombia before retiring as a player in 1996.
In addition to his duties with the Pirates, Heberto has spent the last 17 years as a coach and catching instructor during the Venezuelan Winter League.
He was one of the two catchers for the 2006 All-Star Game Home Run Derby, which was held at PNC Park on July 10.
Personal
Herbie and his wife Maria reside in Venezuela and have three daughters; Maria Jesus (16), Maria Jose (15) and Maria Angel (14).
